Taking Your Car to a French Garage
Describe the problem, ask for a quote, get through the contrôle technique and leave with a proper invoice.
In France a car must pass the contrôle technique four years after first registration and then every two years; a défaillance majeure means you have two months to fix it and pass a contre-visite. Garages must display their hourly labour rate and give you a written devis on request, so ask for one before agreeing to any work. 'La révision' is the scheduled service in the maker's booklet, and 'la vidange' is the oil change.
