A Day on the Beach in Biarritz
Read the flags, brave the Atlantic, dodge the jellyfish and order an ice cream on a French beach day with a friend.
On French beaches in summer, lifeguards watch a swimming zone marked by red-and-yellow flags; a red flag means swimming is forbidden, and a purple flag means pollution. On the Atlantic coast the tide matters: the beach can shrink a lot at high tide and the currents are strong. In August, find your spot early, and expect to queue for ice cream.
