Ordering Coffee Like a Parisian
Know your café from your crème and your allongé, standing at the counter or sitting on the terrace.
In France « un café » means an espresso; ask for un allongé for a longer black coffee, un crème for a large milky one, and un noisette for an espresso with a dash of milk. In traditional cafés a coffee costs less standing at the comptoir than sitting en terrasse, and the bill is often brought with the drink. Use vous with the waiter and tu with a friend.
