Fire Safety in a French Home

Check your smoke alarm, avoid kitchen and electrical fires, and know exactly what to say and do if smoke appears.

Every home in France must have at least one smoke detector (« un DAAF ») since 2015, and tenants are responsible for checking it and changing the battery. In an emergency call 18 for the fire brigade (« les pompiers », who also handle medical callouts) or 112 from any phone. If you smell gas, don't touch any switches, open the windows, get out and call the GRDF gas emergency line on 0 800 47 33 33.
