When Friendships Go Wrong at a French School

Talk with your child, then their teacher, when friendships fall apart at a French collège.

At collège the professeur principal is your first contact for anything affecting your child, and the CPE (conseiller principal d'éducation) handles school life, break times and conflicts; you request a meeting through the school's online platform or the carnet de correspondance. Since 2022 school bullying (harcèlement scolaire) is a criminal offence in France, schools run the pHARe anti-bullying programme, and there is a free national helpline, 3018.

  1. 1

My son's been a bit down lately.

  2. 2

Il ne veut plus aller au collège.

He doesn't want to go to school any more.

  3. 3

Has something happened with your friends? (to your child)

  4. 4

They don't want me hanging around with them at break.

  5. 5

Ils m'ont viré du groupe Snap.

They kicked me out of the Snapchat group.

  6. 6

Tu peux tout me dire, d'accord ?

You can tell me anything, OK?

  7. 7

I'd like to request a meeting with the form teacher.

  8. 8

We've noticed he's quieter in class.

  9. 9

Vous pensez que c'est du harcèlement ?

    Do you think it's bullying?

  10. 10

For now it looks more like a falling-out between friends.

  11. 11

On va garder un œil sur lui à la récré.

We'll keep an eye on him at break.

  12. 12

I don't want him to feel singled out.

  13. 13

It would be good to put them together for group work.

  14. 14

S'il y a quoi que ce soit, tenez-moi au courant.

If anything at all happens, keep me posted.

  15. 15

Kids that age change their minds all the time.

  16. 16

My daughter went through the same thing last year.

  17. 17

How about inviting a classmate round on Saturday? (to your child)

  18. 18

Don't make a big deal of it in front of him.

  19. 19

    Finalement, tout s'est arrangé.

In the end, it all sorted itself out.

  20. 20

    Il est redevenu lui-même.

He's back to his old self.
