Having a Baby in a French Maternité

Follow one night from the first contractions to the morning after, at a French maternity unit.

In France you give birth in a maternité, where a sage-femme (midwife) follows the labour and most women choose the péridurale (epidural), covered by the Assurance Maladie. A partner can usually stay in the delivery room, and the standard stay after a normal birth is about three days. The birth must be declared at the town hall (mairie) of the place of birth within five working days; some maternity units have a mairie desk on site.
