Ordering Like a Local in a French Café
Order your coffee and breakfast, find a table, deal with small problems and pay in a French café.
In France 'un café' means a small espresso; ask for 'un crème' for coffee with steamed milk, 'un allongé' for a longer black coffee, or 'une noisette' for an espresso with a dash of milk. Drinks cost least standing at the bar (au comptoir) and most on the terrace, and in a traditional café you sit down, wait to be served and pay at the end. Service is included by law, so tipping is optional, though leaving small change is common.
