Expecting a Baby in France

Announce your pregnancy, follow your check-ups with a midwife and ask the questions that matter before the birth.

In France a pregnancy can be followed by a GP, a gynaecologist or a sage-femme (midwife), and it must be declared to the Assurance Maladie and the CAF before the end of the 14th week, which the professional does online. There are seven compulsory prenatal check-ups and usually three ultrasounds, around 12, 22 and 32 weeks, and from the sixth month care is fully covered. In big cities, register with a maternity hospital (maternité) early; maternity leave for a first child is 16 weeks, usually 6 before and 10 after the birth.
