Praise and Honest Feedback, the French Way
Heap on praise, deliver a gentle 'but', and take criticism gracefully with the expressions French friends really use.
French people are often more direct with criticism than English speakers, and understatement is a form of praise: 'c'est pas mal' can mean it's genuinely good. Between friends, compliments are casual and colourful (chapeau, nickel, t'as géré), and a critique is usually softened with 'le prends pas mal' or 'je vais être franc'. Feedback at work or between friends is commonly called un retour.
