Sorting Your Rubbish in France

Find the right bin, sort packaging, glass and food waste, and get rid of bulky items in your new building.

In most French towns, all packaging and paper go loose into the yellow bin (la poubelle jaune), glass goes into street bottle banks, and since 2024 every household must be able to sort food waste, by a shared composteur or a separate brown bin. Colours and collection days vary by town, so check your mairie's website or the gardien of your building. Old furniture goes to the déchetterie or a booked bulky-waste pick-up (les encombrants), and unlike some countries France has almost no deposit on bottles.
