Hedging Your Estimates at Work in France
Say 'probably', 'roughly' and 'don't hold me to it' the way French colleagues do when the boss wants a date.
In French workplaces, giving a firm deadline you can't keep is worse than sounding cautious, so people hedge a lot: à vue de nez, sous réserve, normalement. « Normalement » is the classic one and really means 'if nothing goes wrong'. In most tech teams people use tu, including with their manager, and drop the « ne » when speaking.
