Meeting a Friend's New Baby in France
Text to arrange a visit, say the right things about the baby, and leave the new parents to rest.
In France new parents usually send a faire-part (birth announcement) and receive visitors at home after a short stay at the maternité. Text before you drop by, keep the visit short, wash your hands before holding the baby, and bring a small gift such as a body (baby vest), a doudou (soft comforter) or a home-cooked meal. Friends use tu with each other; when you speak to both parents at once you use vous as a plural.
