Talking Shop Over Drinks in France
Everyday French expressions for chatting about your job, your boss, your workload and your next move.
In France a CDI is a permanent contract and a CDD a fixed-term one; many people also work à leur compte as auto-entrepreneurs. Employees often get tickets-restaurant (meal vouchers), and when you resign from a CDI you work a notice period (le préavis), commonly one to three months depending on your contract. Asking « tu fais quoi dans la vie ? » is normal small talk, but asking someone's salary directly is still a bit taboo.
