Dressing for a Spanish Wedding

Decode a dress code, sort out a suit and compliment outfits at a formal event in Spain.

Spanish weddings have their own unwritten rules: a morning ceremony means short dresses and maybe a fascinator, evening ones are more formal, and nobody but the bride wears white. Many guests rent a suit or have one altered at a tailor's. The cards follow a guest from reading the invitation, through a fitting at the tailor's, to the wedding day in Seville.

What does the invitation say about the dress code?

  2. 2

It says we have to wear a dark suit.

  3. 3

    ¿Qué te vas a poner?

What are you going to wear?

  4. 4

Since it's a morning wedding, long dresses aren't the done thing.

  5. 5

    ¿Crees que debería llevar tocado?

Do you think I should wear a fascinator?

  6. 6

Never wear white to a wedding - that's for the bride.

  7. 7

I'm going to rent a suit instead of buying one.

  8. 8

La chaqueta me queda un poco ancha.

The jacket is a bit loose on me.

  9. 9

¿Me podría meter un poco los pantalones?

Could you take the trousers in a little?

  10. 10

    ¿Para cuándo estaría listo?

When would it be ready by?

  11. 11

Is a tie compulsory or can I go without one?

  12. 12

    ¡Vas guapísima!

    You look stunning!

  13. 13

Hoy vas hecho un pincel, ¿eh?

    You look really sharp today.

  14. 14

    Estos tacones me están matando.

    These heels are killing me.

  15. 15

I'll change my shoes for the party later.

  16. 16

Prefiero ir demasiado arreglado que quedarme corto.

I'd rather be overdressed than underdressed.

  17. 17

Better to ask the couple than put your foot in it.

  18. 18

¿Esta camisa pega con la chaqueta?

Does this shirt go with the jacket?

  19. 19

I'll lend you a tie that goes with the suit.
