Fire Safety at Home in Spain

Checking detectors, avoiding kitchen fires and getting out safely in a Spanish flat.

Smoke detectors aren't required in many older Spanish flats, extinguishers sit on the landings, and plenty of homes still run on an orange butane cylinder. In an emergency you call 112 and never take the lift. The cards follow a rented flat in Bilbao: a safety check with the landlady, a near miss in the kitchen and a night when smoke fills the landing.
