Using an interpreter: at the health centre

What you say when you book an interpreter, start a meeting through one, and make sure nothing gets lost.

You can speak decent Swedish and still want an interpreter for medical or legal details; that's normal and it's your right. Follow Robin from the booking call to a visit with a phone interpreter on speaker.

  3. 3

    I need an interpreter.

Tip: No article: Swedish drops 'an' here.

  4. 4

    Vilket språk gäller det?

    Which language is it?

Tip: 'Language' is an ett-word, so the question word ends in -t.

  5. 5

I speak a little Swedish, but not enough for this.

Tip: Explaining why you want one even though you speak some.

Tip: The adverb means 'preferably'. A normal request; just ask.

  10. 10

    Det ska jag skriva in.

I'll make a note of that.

Tip: Literally 'that shall I write in', meaning enter it in the system. Object first, verb second.

  11. 11

    Kostar tolken något?

    Does the interpreter cost anything?

    Tip: Yes/no question: verb first.

  12. 12

    Tolken kostar ingenting för dig.

The interpreter doesn't cost you anything.

Tip: 'Nothing' used as the object instead of 'not ... anything'.

  13. 13

    Tolken är uppkopplad nu.

    The interpreter is connected now.

Tip: From the verb 'connect up'. Used for calls and the internet.

  14. 14

    Can you hear me OK?

Tip: Literally 'hear you me well?'

  18. 18

Please talk directly to the nurse, not to me.

Tip: The adverb softens an instruction into 'please do'.

  19. 19

Jag försöker hålla meningarna korta, så att tolken hinner med.

I'll try to keep my sentences short so the interpreter can keep up.

Tip: Keep up = literally 'have time with'.

Could you speak a bit more slowly?

Tip: Comparative of the adverb: 'slow-er'.

  21. 21

    Sorry, I didn't quite understand.

Tip: 'Not really' softens it to 'not quite'.

Yes please, the same interpreter if possible.

Tip: 'If it goes' = if possible.

  28. 28

Min granne låter sin dotter tolka hos läkaren.

My neighbour lets his daughter interpret at the doctor's.

Tip: His own daughter uses the reflexive possessive. 'At the doctor's' uses the preposition for 'at someone's place'.
